The Canaan Fir (Abies balsamea var. phanerolepis) is a medium-sized evergreen tree. It typically grows 40-60 feet tall with a narrow, pyramidal shape, making it a popular choice for Christmas trees and ornamental landscaping. Its needles are soft, flat, and dark green, with a silvery-blue underside, giving the tree a unique two-toned appearance. The needles are arranged in a spiral pattern along the branches and release a pleasant balsam fragrance when crushed. Canaan fir produces small, cylindrical cones that start out green or purple and mature to brown in the fall. These cones are perched upright on the upper branches and release seeds as they disintegrate. This tree is resilient to a variety of soil types but prefers cool, moist, well-drained soil. Canaan fir is known for its hardiness, tolerating wetter soils better than some other firs, and it has a moderate growth rate.
