Description
Size: 2-3 ft. / Age: 1-0 / Growth Rate: 2-3 ft./yr. American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) is a very large, fast-growing native shade tree for full sun (6–8+ hours/day) that thrives in deep, moist to wet alluvial soils, tolerates heavy clays and periodic flooding, but has low tolerance for chronic road-salt soils. Mature size is typically 75–100 feet tall with a broad 60–80 foot spread, occasionally larger on rich bottomland sites. Juvenile growth commonly reaches 2–3 feet per year with adequate moisture, slowing with age. Its massive limbs and frequent trunk cavities provide nesting and den sites for owls, wood ducks, and small mammals; persistent seed balls feed finches and other birds; and the broad canopy and root system enhance riparian habitat by shading streams and stabilizing banks.
