Description
Size: 2-3 ft. / Age: Rooted Cutting / Growth Rate: Up to 4-8 ft./yr. Hybrid poplar (Populus × spp., e.g., cottonwood × Eurasian black poplar crosses) is a very fast-growing, short-lived shade tree for moist, well-drained loams or alluvial soils but is adaptable to heavier clays if soil moisture is reliable; it dislikes chronic drought or high salinity, and prefers full-sun. Mature size is typically 50–80 feet tall with a 30–50 foot spread, and juvenile growth can reach 4–8 feet per year under good moisture and fertility, slowing after 8–10 years. Wildlife benefits are modest compared to native willows/cottonwoods, but hybrids still provide quick cover and perching, buds and twigs are browsed by deer and beaver; dense root systems can also help stabilize disturbed, riparian, or landfill cap soils.
