Description
Size: 18-24” / Age: 1-0 / Growth Rate: 1-2+ ft./yr. Staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina) is a vigorous, colony-forming native shrub/small tree that thrives in full sun (tolerates light shade) on well-drained soils, including dry, rocky, or poor sites; it dislikes chronically wet soils. Typically 10–25 feet tall with a 15–30 foot spread, it expands by suckers to form thickets. Growth is fast—often 1–2+ feet per year in open, sunny locations. Showy summer flowers support pollinators, and the dense, red fruit clusters persist into winter, providing high-value food for songbirds, wild turkey, and small mammals; thickets also furnish excellent cover and nesting habitat.
