$52.00
Description
Size: 18-24” / Age: 1-0 / Growth Rate: 6-12”/yr. Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is a native, deciduous holly that fruits best in full sun but tolerates partial shade, thriving in moist to wet, acidic soils (peaty loams to heavy clays) and tolerating periodic flooding while disliking alkaline sites. It typically reaches 6–10 ft tall with a 5–8 ft spread, growing at a slow to moderate rate (about 6–12 in/year once established). Small summer flowers support pollinators, and abundant bright-red berries—produced only when a compatible male is planted nearby—persist into winter, providing valuable food for songbirds (e.g., cedar waxwings, robins) and small mammals while dense twigging offers cover in wetland edges and rain-garden plantings.
