Size: 12-18” / Age: 2-0 / Growth Rate: About 1 foot per year. Common pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a small, native deciduous understory tree that typically grows 15 to 30 feet tall and is valued for its tropical-looking foliage, distinctive maroon spring flowers, and edible fruit. Its large, simple leaves can reach up to 12 inches long and turn yellow in fall. Pawpaw produces greenish-yellow, custard-like fruits that ripen in late summer to early fall and have a sweet flavor often compared to banana, mango, or melon. It grows best in moist, fertile, well-drained soils in partial shade to full sun, although trees generally produce more fruit with increased sunlight. Pawpaw is adaptable to a range of soil conditions but does not tolerate prolonged flooding, severe drought, or heavily compacted soils. Most pawpaw trees require cross-pollination, so it best to plant these trees in groups, or within 50-ft. from each other, for best fruit production.
