American plum (Prunus americana) is a small native deciduous tree or large shrub that typically grows 10 to 20 feet tall and often forms dense colonies through root suckering. It is recognized by its spreading form, thorn-like branchlets, clusters of white flowers that bloom in early spring before the leaves emerge, and round red, orange, or yellow fruits that ripen from late summer into early fall. The edible plums can be eaten fresh when fully ripe or used in jams, jellies, sauces, and baked goods. American plum grows best in full sun to partial shade on well-drained soils and is adaptable to loam, clay, sand, and moderately dry conditions once established, although it does not tolerate prolonged flooding.
