Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a large, long-lived deciduous conifer that typically grows 50 to 70 feet tall in landscapes, with the potential to become much larger at maturity. Unlike most conifers, it sheds its soft, feathery, needle-like leaves each fall, when they turn an attractive orange-brown to russet color. The tree has a straight trunk, reddish-brown fibrous bark, and a pyramidal form when young that becomes broader and more irregular with age. Bald cypress grows best in full sun and moist to wet soils, making it well suited to stormwater basins, pond margins, flood-prone areas, and other periodically saturated sites. It can also tolerate average garden soils once established, provided the site does not become excessively dry. In Wisconsin, it is best to plant this tree in protected areas to avoid harsh winter winds.
