Description
Size: 18-24” / Age: 1-0 / Growth Rate: 1 to 2 feet per year. Common lilac (Syringa vulgaris) is a deciduous ornamental shrub, rather than a tree, that typically grows 8 to 15 feet tall and wide with an upright to spreading, multi-stemmed form. It is widely recognized for its highly fragrant, tubular flowers, which appear in dense clusters in mid- to late spring and range from purple and lavender to pink, but can vary depending on genetics. Its heart-shaped green leaves generally remain attractive through the growing season, although older plants may become open or leggy without periodic renewal pruning. Common lilac grows best in full sun on fertile, moderately moist, well-drained soils and performs particularly well in neutral to slightly alkaline soils. It does not tolerate prolonged standing water or poorly drained sites.
