Description
Size: 18-24” / Age: 1-0 / Growth Rate: 1 to 2 feet per year. Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) is a small deciduous ornamental tree that typically grows 20 to 30 feet tall with a rounded to spreading crown and graceful branching habit. It is best known for its rosy pink to lavender-pink flowers, which bloom directly along the branches and trunk in early spring before the leaves emerge. The tree’s distinctive heart-shaped leaves develop after flowering, remain medium to dark green through summer, and often turn yellow in fall. Eastern redbud grows best in full sun to partial shade on fertile, moist, well-drained soils, but it can tolerate a range of soil types if drainage is adequate. It is not well suited to prolonged standing water, heavily compacted soils, or highly exposed sites.
